The two sides in this schism have subsequently been labelled, conventionally, ‘Snnuîs’ and ‘Shî‘îs’. Each side adopted a historical position in justification of its present attitude. The Shî‘îs came to reject the religious authority of those, even among Muammad’s associates, who had not recognized ‘Alî’s sole right to the caliphate (a position hitherto held only by radical Shî‘îs). Correspondingly, it gradually became characteristic for their opponents to accept the religious authority of all Muammad’s associates without distinction, despite the quarrels that had taken place among them.
